Discussion

Without the capability to generate audit records, it would be difficult to establish, correlate, and investigate the events relating to an incident, or identify those responsible for one.

Audit records can be generated from various components within the application (e.g., process, module). Certain specific application functionalities may be audited as well. The list of audited events is the set of events for which audits are to be generated. This set of events is typically a subset of the list of all events for which the system is capable of generating audit records.

DoW has defined the list of events for which the application will provide an audit record generation capability as the following:

(i) Successful and unsuccessful attempts to access, modify, or delete privileges, security objects, security levels, or categories of information (e.g., classification levels);

(ii) Access actions, such as successful and unsuccessful logon attempts, privileged activities or other system level access, starting and ending time for user access to the system, concurrent logons from different workstations, successful and unsuccessful accesses to objects, all program initiations, and all direct access to the information system; and

(iii) All account creation, modification, disabling, and termination actions.

Check

Verify an ICAP service is configured with secure connections and ICAP feedback enabled for interactive and noninteractive traffic with the following steps:

This is not applicable unless using the Broadcom Content Analysis System.

1. Go to Configuration >> Content Analysis >> ICAP and select the "ICAP Feedback" tab/section. 2. If there is no ICAP service configured, this is a finding. 3. If an ICAP service is configured, but it is using "plain ICAP Connections," then this is a finding. 4. Under "Interactive Traffic," if "Provide ICAP feedback during ICAP scanning for interactive traffic" is not enabled, this is also a finding. 5. Under "Non-Interactive Traffic," if "Provide ICAP feedback during ICAP scanning for non-interactive traffic" is not enabled, this is a finding.

If any of the above conditions are not met, this is a finding.

Fix

Configure an ICAP service with secure connections and ICAP feedback enabled for interactive and noninteractive traffic with the following steps:

1. Go to Configuration >> Content Analysis >> ICAP. 2. Click "Add," and "ICAP Service". 3. Enter the service URL. For example: icap://cas.mil/ICAP-service 4. Click "Threat Protection." 5. Enter "250" for "Maximum number of connections." 6. Enter "65535" for "Connection timeout." 7. Enable "Defer scanning at threshold," and enter "80%". 8. Enable "Notify administrator when virus detected (email msg)," and click "Use exception page from the Edge SWG (ProxySG)." 9. Under Ports, select only "Support secure ICAP connections," enter the port as "11344", and select the proper DoW CA-signed "SSL Device Profile." 10. Under ICAP options, select "Response," "enable preview," and send the following: a. Authenticated Groups. b. Authenticated User. c. Client Address. d. Server Address. e. Server Country. f. Threat Risk Level. g. URL Categories. 11. Click "apply" and "save". 12. Go to Configuration >> Content Analysis >> ICAP. 13. Under "Interactive Traffic," enable "Provide ICAP feedback during ICAP scanning for interactive traffic," and select "5 seconds" with a "Return patience page," feedback type. 14. Under "Non-Interactive Traffic," enable "Provide ICAP feedback during ICAP scanning for non-interactive traffic," and select "5 seconds" with a "Trickle object data from start," feedback type. 15. Click "save" and "save".
